IBM InfoSphere Warehouse

It delivers all of the capabilities needed to cost effectively consolidate, manage, deliver and analyze your business information.

  • Reach further by analyzing unstructured content with the embedded DB2 Warehouse Unstructured Data Analysis Feature.
  • Look deeper into your data with the DB2 Warehouse Cubing Services Feature, a multidimensional analysis server that enables OLAP applications to access up to a terabyte of base OLAP data without requiring multiple copies.
  • Act faster with DB2 Warehouse Extreme Workload Management Feature that enables users to define and manage workload performance criteria.
  • Boost data warehouse performance with DB2 9 software features

DB2 Warehouse is a comprehensive platform including tooling and infrastructure to help data warehouse architects and administrators efficiently design, deploy and maintain an enterprise data warehouse. Capabilities include:

Powerful DB2 data server foundation.

DB2 9.5 is the engine at the heart of the DB2 Warehouse. DB2 9.5 brings features that will reduce the cost of ownership of your warehouse environment and provide improved availability, performance and regulatory compliance capabilities. With its massively scalable, shared-nothing, distributed architecture, DB2 9.5 provides high performance for mixed workload query processing against both relational and native XML data. Advanced features such as data partitioning, new row compression, multidimensional clustering and materialized query tables (MQTs) make DB2 9.5 a powerful engine for dynamic warehousing. Enhanced backup facilities, simplified and automated tuning capabilities, faster data redistribution, and automated upgrades provide lower cost of database administration. Enhanced row compression can dramatically reduce the amount of storage required and can offer significant savings.

Enhanced online analytical processing (OLAP) design and optimization.

To support slice and dice analytics, DB2 Warehouse provides direct support for optimized OLAP analytics against the dynamic warehouse. DB2 Warehouse software tooling enables you to create, edit, import, export, and deploy OLAP models over the relational warehouse schema. Easy to use wizards provide optimization recommendations to dramatically improve the performance of OLAP applications and tools. Newly enhanced features provide deep integration with the embedded analytics capabilities and relational cubing for optimized, browser-based, embedded OLAP analytics. New for V9.5 is the Cubing Services multidimensional analysis server that gives OLAP applications access to terabyte data volumes via industry standard OLAP connectivity.

Administration Console

The DB2 Warehouse Administration Console is a Web-based application for managing and monitoring business intelligence (BI) applications. Installed with the WebSphere Application Server, the DB2 Warehouse Administration Console uses Web clients to access and deploy, schedule, and monitor data warehouse applications modeled and designed in DB2 Warehouse Design Studio. The DB2 Warehouse Administration Console provides OLAP and cubing functions to manage cube servers and cubes, import metadata, and optimize OLAP queries. You can use the cubing component of DB2 Warehouse to streamline the deployment and management of OLAP solutions and improve the performance of OLAP tools and applications. With the Administration Console, you can:

  • Create, remove, start, stop, or restart a cube server
  • Add, remove, start, stop, or restart a cube. You can also rebuild a cube’s member cache and empty the data cache for a cube v Import metadata into the DB2 Warehouse metadata database
  • Run the Optimization Advisor and analyze summary table usage

Data mining and visualization

Powerful, yet simple, data mining capabilities enable integrated analytics of the data in the enterprise data warehouse. Standard data mining models (clustering, associations, classification, and prediction) are supported and can be developed via drag and drop in the Design Studio. These models also may be imported in industry standard Predictive Model Markup Language (PMML) format from third-party modeling tools. The data mining models can be executed in the production environment to provide real time scoring of data records. Additionally, rich presentation components are provided to enable visual analysis of data mining results.

Modeling and design tools.

DB2 Warehouse Design Studio includes modeling and design tools based on and interoperable with IBM Rational® Data Architect software, enabling you to design, model, and reverse engineer physical database schemas. Modeling features include validation, compliance analysis, impact analysis, and change management.

Embedded data movement and transformation

A powerful, yet easy to use graphical tool for data warehouse construction and administration is included in DB2 Warehouse. The tool provides a palette of drag and drop transformation operators that form visual data flows. These data flows are compiled into DB2-specific SQL operations that run within the warehouse database. Control flows add support for conditional processing logic, parallel processing, and special DB2 functions, such as row compression and roll-in/roll-out operations. You can use these tools to more efficiently prepare and populate data warehouse analytic structures necessary for data mining, multidimensional and embedded analytics.

Unstructured Data Analysis

Unstructured data represents up to 80% of the data within an organization. You can use DB2 Warehouse to extract structured information out of previously untapped business text. The business value is immense -- enabling fraud detection, product defect analysis, better customer profiling, and early warning on customer attrition. Unstructured Data Analysis is integrated into the Design Studio and provides drag and drop processing using two basic annotators -- dictionary and pattern based extractors.

Extreme Workload Management

Customers are consolidating their databases into larger databases for better efficiency and manageability, as well as to integrate their enterprise data. These consolidated databases experience higher transaction volumes with more competition for resources from different applications with varied execution characteristics. And even more importantly, these applications are from different parts of the business with different business priorities. All of these factors make the job of managing performance and workloads more complex and more difficult to resolve with the existing tools. DB2 Workload Management enables you to manage, enforce, and monitor workloads and their service levels for users across your warehouse. DB2 Workload Management enables you to:

  • Manage workloads based on user priorities
  • Prevent proliferation of data marts
  • Prevent runaway queries
  • Provide lightweight, real-time monitoring of performance
